Magpies hope to hand their big money summer signing a debut soon
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has given a new timeline for Yoane Wissa's return from injury.
Wissa is still awaiting his Newcastle debut after completing a £55million transfer from Brentford on Deadline Day at the beginning of the month.
The 29-year-old suffered a knee injury while on international duty with DR Congo, and the issue caused him to miss the 1-0 win over Wolves at the weekend.
Wissa will remain sidelined for Newcastle’s Champions League showdown at home to Barcelona on Thursday, but Howe is hopeful of having his summer signing available for selection next month.
“Yoane will, we hope, be back after the next international break,” Howe told reporters ahead of the Barcelona fixture.
“That’s the plan, so Brighton, the first game back (after the break).
“It’s always flexible. It can always change, but that’s what I’ve been told.”
Newcastle play six times in three different competitions before their aforementioned trip to Brighton on October 18.
As a result, Wissa is set to be sidelined for games against Barcelona, Bournemouth, Bradford, Arsenal, Union Saint-Gilloise and Nottingham Forest.
This injury is also likely to keep Wissa out of DR Congo’s decisive World Cup qualifiers in October, they face Togo and Sudan hoping to pip Senegal to top spot in Group B.
Despite the absence of Wissa and Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal, Howe is still relishing a magical night at St James’ Park in the Champions League.
"It is a historic fixture. As soon as we realised we were drawn against Barcelona, it had a sort of a magical feel to it. I think it'll be an amazing game to experience," he added.
"Obviously, we've been focusing on the tactical preparation and making sure we deliver a good performance. I'm really excited to sample the atmosphere and I think that will just be an incredible thing again."
