Newcastle United have rejected Arsenal’s opening bid for captain Bruno Guimaraes, with the Gunners now considering whether to return with an improved offer.

According to Sky Sports News, Arsenal have opened direct talks with Newcastle over a move for the Brazil international, but the Magpies remain determined to keep one of their key players despite growing interest from the Premier League champions.

Guimaraes, 28, is understood to have informed Newcastle last month of his desire to join Arsenal. However, the midfielder still has two years remaining on his contract at St James’ Park, with the club also holding an option to extend the deal by a further year.

Newcastle’s stance remains unchanged, with the club keen to retain their captain as preparations continue for the new season.

Guimaraes has already linked up with his team-mates at the club’s training camp in La Manga, where incoming head coach Matthias Jaissle has begun work ahead of his official unveiling.

While Arsenal are expected to discuss whether to submit an improved bid, negotiations between the two clubs are still at an early stage.

It is widely reported that personal terms are not expected to be an issue should the clubs eventually reach an agreement, with discussions currently centred on the transfer fee.

Guimaraes has been one of Newcastle’s standout performers since joining from Lyon in January 2022 and has developed into one of the Premier League’s leading midfielders during his time on Tyneside.

For now, Newcastle remain firm in their position, leaving Arsenal to decide whether to increase their offer as they continue their pursuit of the Brazil international.
