Newcastle United are now expected to press ahead with a move for Braga goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek.

According to journalist Craig Hope, the Magpies will trigger the Czech international’s release clause if negotiations continue in the right direction.

While there are still agreements to be finalised before any transfer is completed, confidence is growing in the Newcastle quarters that a deal can be reached.

Hornicek has a £30 million release clause in his contract and has emerged as one of the most highly-rated goalkeepers in Portuguese football following an outstanding campaign.

The Newcastle target enjoyed an excellent 2025/26 season, keeping 24 clean sheets in 55 appearances across all competitions.

His performances on the European stage were particularly impressive, with seven shut-outs in 14 Europa League outings.

He has also carried that form into the new season.

Hornicek delivered another commanding display as they claimed a 1-0 victory over Zeleznicar Pancevo in the Europa Conference League qualifiers.

Newcastle are not the only side to have shown an interest.

He reportedly turned down a move to newly-promoted Hull City earlier this summer despite the Championship club activating his release clause.

Portuguese heavyweights Benfica have also made enquiries over his availability in recent days.

The Magpies have already strengthened their goalkeeping options this summer with the £18 million arrival of Ewen Jaouen.

However, the youngster endured a difficult pre-season outing against Bristol City and is viewed as one for the future rather than an immediate first-choice option.

Hornicek’s experience, consistency and impressive record in European competition make him an attractive target for incoming Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle.

Magpies boss Eddie Howe left his role abruptly, and the German tactician faces an uphill task next season.

A task that won’t be helped by the fact that Newcastle keep missing out on top targets and captain Bruno Guimaraes is set to leave St. James’ Park.
