The Champions League table is starting to take shape.
There are 18 Champions League fixtures this midweek.
There were nine Champions League fixtures last night.
Then another nine tonight, including Newcastle v Athletic Bilbao.
In the Swiss League phase, the top eight clubs will automatically go through to the last 16 knockout stages.
Whilst those 16 clubs finishing between 9th and 24th out of the 36 teams, will go into the play-offs to decide the other eight clubs in the last 16.
Each of the 36 clubs playing four games at home and four away, in this Swiss League phase.
So after tonight, we will be exactly at the halfway point, all 36 clubs will have completed four of their eight matches.
There were the Champions League results last night:
Tuesday 4 November
Napoli 0 Eintracht Frankfurt 0
Slavia Prague 0 Arsenal 3
PSG 1 Bayern Munich 2
Spurs 4 FC Copenhagen 0
Juventus 1 Sporting Lisbon 1
Olympiakos 1 PSV 1
Bodo/Glimt 0 Monaco 1
Liverpool 1 Real Madrid 0
Atletico Madrid 3 Union S-G 1
That has left the Champions League table looking like this on Wednesday (5 November 2025) morning:
With six points and a goal difference of +6, Newcastle United are in a very strong position after the opening three rounds of matches.
After last night’s matches, Newcastle United could go as high as third tonight. That would need United to win by at least four goals against Athletic Bilbao and other results tonight to go in NUFC’s favour.
I think that realistically, Newcastle United could end the night in fifth if defeating Athletic Bilbao.
I can’t see Inter failing to get something against FC Kairat, whilst Newcastle would need to win by at least four to get above PSG. To end up in fifth in the Champions League table at the halfway point, (assuming not ahead of PSG or Inter), we would then need to win by at least the same number of goals as Barcelona (away at Club Brugge) and see Man City draw with Borussia Dortmund.
For sure though, most importantly, at the halfway point Newcastle will end tonight in the top eight automatic qualifying places if getting a third Champions League victory of the season.
