Neymar took a fresh step in his recovery on Wednesday, rejoining Brazil’s squad and taking part in the opening phase of training in New Jersey, United States.

According to Diario Do Peixe, it was his first activity alongside team-mates since suffering a right calf injury, and he was greeted with applause before going through the customary players’ tunnel during the warm-up.

On Tuesday he had worked individually on the pitch with the ball. On Wednesday he completed the group warm-up, then followed a tailored physical programme away from the main session.

Brazil’s medical staff consider his progress on plan, with recent tests indicating positive recovery that allows a gradual increase in field work.

Neymar sustained a grade two right calf injury on 17 May during Santos’ Brasileiro match against Coritiba. Since linking up with the national team he has focused on rehab, strength work and load management, after 29 days without training on grass.

While he no longer has clinical issues, coaches feel he still needs fitness and match sharpness. His involvement in training is expected to increase over the coming days.

The internal view is that his return remains on schedule and is expected to come against Scotland on Wednesday 24.
