Nigel Farage says Sunderland have invited him to attend a home match at the Stadium of Light during a visit to the city for Reform UK’s local election launch.

“I’ve been talking to one of the directors and they’d very much like to see me there,” he said. “If I can make it I will. Clubs should want to talk to me.” He was speaking to ITV.

The parliamentary seat covering the club has been held by Labour’s Lewis Atkinson since 2024, when he won by a 6,073 majority. Reform’s candidate finished second with 27 per cent of the vote.

Reform currently hold no seats on the city council, with elections due in May. Sunderland co-owner and non-executive board member Juan Sartori previously ran to lead Uruguay’s National Party in 2019, finishing second to Luis Lacalle Pou. He later became the country’s youngest serving senator.

Farage’s claim follows his visit to Ipswich Town’s Portman Road on Monday, which drew backlash. He posed for photos and posted a video wishing the club luck in their push for Premier League promotion.
