Coventry City boss Frank Lampard has emerged as a contender to replace Oliver Glasner at Crystal Palace.

According to Talksport, the 47-year-old is on the shortlist of potential options to take over from the Austrian, who is set to depart at the end of the campaign.

The Eagles’ head coach has already confirmed that he has no intention of renewing his contract with the Premier League side, with his current deal expiring in the summer.

Glasner’s immediate future was the subject of speculation following Saturday’s loss to Sunderland in which he claimed the team had felt abandoned in the aftermath of Marc Guehi’s move to Manchester City.

However, the 51-year-old now looks likely to remain with the club for the remainder of the campaign, with Palace still competing in the UEFA Conference League.

Lampard moving from Coventry to Selhurst Park wouldn’t be the first time he left a Championship side for the Premier League, having moved from Derby County to Chelsea in 2019.

When asked if he had any warning for Coventry amid this speculation surrounding Lampard’s future, FLW’s Derby fan pundit Shaun Woodward claimed this is what to expect when they have such a famous football figure as their head coach.

He believes these links are a testament of the work he’s done with the Sky Blues, but that there is no loyalty in football.

“That’s the risk you take when you have a manager that’s, with no disrespect to Coventry City, bigger than the club,” Woodward told Football League World.

“Lampard is a massive name, and he’s now got experience managing in the Premier League.

“There’s going to be links to him quite a lot of the time when there’s vacancies coming up in the Premier League, especially when he’s doing well with a club.

“So in a way it’s a compliment, because he’s doing a great job with Coventry.

“But, there’s no loyalty in football, Derby have found that out themselves with [Steve] McClaren, who got tempted by Newcastle and then obviously with Lampard going to Chelsea — which I can kind of get that because it’s his club, and the opportunity was just too big to turn down, albeit it was his first season in management so it did come too early in his career.

“But now he’s quite an experienced manager for someone so young still, and he’s going to get linked with clubs.”

However, Woodward doesn’t think that Lampard will leave Coventry mid-season, and that he hopes the former Derby boss remains at the CBS Arena, as he is doing a great job there.

“I can’t see him leaving this season because Coventry are doing so well, and it really would be not a good move for him, not a good look if he did leave,” he continued.

“But I expect the unexpected because money talks and Coventry, for as good as they’re doing, will not be able to offer him the money that a Premier League club like Palace can.

“So, watch this space.

“But in a way it’s a compliment because he’s doing so well for them, but that’s the problem when you’ve got such a big name manager, they’re always going to be on the shortlists for jobs when they’re coming up.

“I hope he does stay at Coventry because he’s doing a great job there, and the fans deserve some loyalty.

“But this is football, and it’s very rare.”

Coventry are top of the Championship table, and have their sights set on a Premier League return this year.

Replacing Oliver Glasner will be tempting for Frank Lampard

If Crystal Palace do push to hire Lampard at some point in 2026, then it will be difficult to see him turning down that opportunity.

While it is not quite comparable to Chelsea, it is still another chance to prove himself with an established Premier League team.

The Eagles have built a reputation as one of the best of the top flight’s middle class, and the working there will bring him back into the spotlight at the pinnacle of the game.

Crystal Palace could also still qualify for Europe for next season as well, which will only be a further incentive for someone like Lampard to take over.
