Noa Lang has returned to training with the Netherlands after surgery on a deep cut to his right thumb suffered at Anfield, with the Galatasaray winger having narrowly avoided amputation.

He was injured on Wednesday during the second leg of Galatasaray’s Champions League tie at Liverpool, which ended 0-4, and was operated on immediately after. Cleared to join the March camp, he will be rested for Friday’s friendly against Norway. “I still have my thumb intact, that is the most important thing,” Lang told Ziggo Sport.

Club medics regard the injury as significant, though there has been no complete amputation, and he is being closely monitored in coordination with the Netherlands staff. He still needs help with some daily tasks as he is right-handed.

He trained this week with a bulky dressing on the injured thumb.

Lang could feature on Tuesday against Ecuador if all goes well. “I just cannot play PlayStation for now, but that will come back. Luckily I only need my legs to play football.”

UEFA has opened an investigation into the circumstances, with Lang appearing to cut his hand on a metal fitting above the pitchside advertising boards at Anfield.
