Lazio president Claudio Lotito has completed the purchase of Reggina 1914, returning to dual ownership for the first time since selling Salernitana in 2021.
The club said in a statement that the sale was finalised in Rome on Friday, aimed at ensuring continuity and fresh growth while honouring the club’s history and local passion. It also credited Reggio Calabria mayor Francesco Cannizzaro, a fellow Forza Italia member, for brokering talks.
Reggina have endured miserable years, including demotion to Serie D in 2023 for financial irregularities. Prior majority owner Nino Ballarino had negotiated with Italian-American businessman Matt Rizzetta, but those talks were abandoned in favour of Lotito.
The timing has unsettled parts of the fanbase in Rome, with organised Lazio groups in open revolt against the increasingly unpopular owner.
A new rule in Italy bars one person or entity from owning two professional clubs. If Reggina are promoted to Serie C at the end of next season, as planned, Lotito would have one year to sell either the Amaranto or Lazio.
