VfL Wolfsburg officially confirmed the signing of Japanese striker Kento Shiogai yesterday. In other Wolfsburg-related transfer news, a highly reliable source reports that – as expected – the club’s pursuit of England U21 international Charlie Cresswell is off. David Ornstein of the Athletic claims that the Bundesliga outfit gave up on acquiring Cresswell after seeing a €20m bid rejected by Toulouse.

Most sources report that a €9m base-transfer-fee along with €1m in bonuses has been agreed upon. The 20-year-old’s new contract in the Lower Saxon Autostadt runs until 2030.

“Kento is a young and talented player with a lot of potential,” newly-appointed VfL sporting director Pirmin Schwegler noted in a club statement. “He stands out on the pitch with his pace, intensity, and strong pressing, and has qualities that are a great fit for VfL Wolfsburg. We are delighted that we were able to convince him to join VfL and will support him in settling into his new surroundings and the Bundesliga as quickly as possible.”

Charlie Cresswell purchase never seemed likely
