OL Lyonnes have signed Chelsea right winger Johanna Rytting Kaneryd on a three-year deal, their third addition of the summer. According to Le Progres, her arrival should complete OL Lyonnes’ incoming business, with departures under review.
The Sweden international, who had agreed to join several days ago, has now been confirmed by the club. She has 70 caps.
She follows goalkeeper Maria Grohs from Bayern Munich and Scotland attacking midfielder Caroline Weir from Real Madrid. Unlike those two, who were out of contract, Rytting Kaneryd still had a year remaining with Chelsea.
Aged 29 and noted for pace and dribbling, she moves for an undisclosed fee after describing last season as one of the most difficult of her career. She started only 11 times under Sonia Bompastor and aims to reboot, with compatriot Emma Nelhage expected to help her settle in the Rhône. Her output dipped to four goals and five assists in 28 matches, from seven and seven in 32 a year earlier.
At Chelsea since 2022, she leaves England with three league titles, two FA Cups and two League Cups. She ranked 23rd in the most recent Ballon d’Or list.
Her signing ends OL Lyonnes’ pursuit of Barcelona’s Salma Paralluelo, the European champion who helped Barça beat Lyon 4-0 in Oslo. Now a free agent after talks in Catalonia collapsed, she has several suitors, with PSG among them and an offer Lyon could not match.
With a squad of more than 30 players and 12 contracts expiring in a year, several exits are expected in the coming weeks. That follows Lindsey Heaps’ departure and the end of Teagan Micah’s deal, while Kadidiatou Diani continues knee rehabilitation.
