Geronimo Rulli delivered a composed display as OM beat Rennes 3-1 at the Vélodrome, while Mathys Silistrie endured a torrid night. According to L'Équipe, it may have been the Argentine’s final outing for the club.
The hosts struck inside two minutes, Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg converting after Mason Greenwood’s service, with Abdelhamid Aït-Boudlal failing to cut it out, even though the Dane had been booed during the line-ups. Greenwood then found Igor Paixao with diagonals on nine minutes. Silistrie’s error at his feet gifted the second on 10 minutes in front of Gouiri.
Greenwood was influential despite some waste, repeatedly tormenting Quentin Merlin. Rulli tipped Mousa Al-Tamari’s strike onto the bar on 33 minutes, Silistrie misjudged an aerial ball on 35, and Facundo Medina blocked Ludovic Blas on 38. Greenwood then stole the ball and shot just wide on 43 minutes.
At half-time Sebastian Szymanski made way for Breel Embolo, and after the break Greenwood delivered a string of whipped crosses. OM’s third arrived on 55 minutes, Höjbjerg pouncing on a loose Rennes pass after more hesitation from Silistrie. He left to an ovation on 82 minutes, replaced by Nouhoum Kamissoko.
Rennes’ defence struggled, with Aït-Boudlal often out of position and passive for the third. Silistrie did make several saves, yet remained unconvincing.
Embolo squandered openings on 47 and 78 minutes, Mahdi Camara hit the post on 81, then Embolo was twice denied in stoppage time. Rulli’s late stop on 90+3 preserved the margin.
