Despite having the best academy in the country (some would say the world) and despite having a team full of talent, Chelsea aren’t dominating the England squad like they used to.
Thomas Tuchel is figuring out his squad for the World Cup next summer, and that’s meant some tinkering. But there are still few Blues in contention for the trip to North America next summer.
Noni Madueke’s departure to Arsenal and Levi Colwill and Cole Palmers injuries means that Reece James was the only Blue left in contention for Tuchel, and indeed he was the only Chelsea player to feature against Andorra on Saturday. He did really well, and the reports on his performance from the media universally had him down as one of the Three Lions best player:
“Reece James: A big favourite of Tuchel and seems to have the right-back position secured. Showed his quality on the ball and assisted Declan Rice for the second goal with an excellent cross. 7,” wrote the BBC.

There is still plenty of time to go until the tournament, and we expect more Chelsea involvement by then.
Trevoh Chalobah should have been in this squad and Tuchel likes him. He called him up for the first time in May and praised his form. We’re not quite sure why he wasn’t.
We’d be very surprised if he’s not on the plane next summer. In fact, given how much he’s going to play this season while Colwill is out, there’s an outside chance he starts for the Three Lions.
We’d love to see that – but there are precious few England games left to change Tuchel’s mind.
