One person was killed and another left critically injured after a shooting on Sunday at a popular entertainment venue in San José, California, which hosts a World Cup 2026 fan zone.
San José police said in a post on X that one victim was pronounced dead at the scene and a second was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The incident is being investigated as a homicide and several surrounding streets remain closed.
No World Cup match was being shown at the time and the day’s only fixture, Canada v South Africa in the round of 32, had already finished.
The shooting occurred in San Pedro Square, one of the Bay Area locations where large crowds have gathered to watch the tournament on giant screens.
The Bay Area has hosted five World Cup matches so far, with the next a knockout tie on Wednesday between Bosnia-Herzegovina and co-hosts United States. Spain are due to face Austria in Los Angeles on Thursday in the round of 32.
