FC Barcelona signed Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich four seasons ago and, since then, he has been the leading No. 9 for the Catalan club. Despite his advancing age, he continues to be essential to Hansi Flick’s team.
Injuries have not allowed the Pole to enjoy any kind of continuity so far this season. However, he has now recovered and played some minutes against Elche in La Liga at the weekend. There is a good chance he will start against Club Brugge in the Champions League.
According to Mundo Deportivo, only two players have a better goals-per-game average than Lewandowski in the Champions League. It shows that he is clearly a legend of the European competition, with 105 goals in 135 matches.
Lewandowski has a goals-per-game average of 0.78, which is only marginally bettered by Lionel Messi with 0.79 and Erling Haaland with 1.05. Of course, the Norwegian forward is still young in his career compared to the Pole, and the scoring average could change over the years.
The 37-year-old Polish forward has been very good in the competition ever since his move to Barcelona. His best numbers obviously came in a Bayern jersey, but his returns for the Catalan club would make most strikers around the world envious.
This is, in all likelihood, set to be the last season for Lewandowski in a Barcelona jersey. It might also be his final stint in the UEFA Champions League, should he choose to move away from Europe or hang up his boots at the end of the season.
Lewandowski is one of the best footballers of his generation, and it is a source of pride that he is wearing the Blaugrana jersey right now. Let’s hope he can give his best and, hopefully, lift the coveted UEFA Champions League trophy this season.
