Palmeiras have stepped up negotiations to sign Alexander Barboza from Botafogo, and any agreement would not prevent a separate move for Zenit defender Nino.
According to Globo.com, Palmeiras remain intent on recruiting Nino, with talks advanced, terms accepted and the player open to a return to Brazil, subject to Zenit granting his release.
Zenit declined to negotiate earlier this year as they were mid-season, but Palmeiras have received a positive indication to revisit discussions for the year's second transfer window and intend to push on after the Russian league ends.
There are four rounds left, with Zenit second on 56 points, one behind FK Krasnodar. The final round is scheduled for 17 May. From then, Palmeiras see scope to move forward.
Talks for Barboza moved on Thursday, though the deal is not considered closed. Uncertainty at Botafogo following John Textor's removal from control late on Thursday has complicated matters.
Palmeiras await clarity on whether that change could prompt a rethink at Botafogo. Barboza's contract runs to the end of the year and renewal talks are stalled. The defender has indicated interest in joining Palmeiras.
If both deals are concluded, Palmeiras would start the second half of 2026 with six centre-backs: Gustavo Gómez, Murilo, Bruno Fuchs, Benedetti, plus Nino and Barboza.
