Paul Doyle, a 54-year-old British national, was jailed on Tuesday for driving into crowds during celebrations in Liverpool on 26 May, an incident that left 134 people injured.
According to L'Équipe, he admitted 31 offences, pleading guilty last month to nine counts of grievous bodily harm and 17 of attempted grievous bodily harm on what would have been day one of his trial.
About one million people turned out to celebrate the Reds’ 20th Premier League title as Doyle drove into the city centre to collect friends.
Over 77 seconds, around 18:00, he shouted, swore and sounded his horn as he repeatedly hit pedestrians. Victims said they can no longer work, care for family, cope in crowds or watch Liverpool matches.
Prosecutors said Doyle lost his temper and deliberately drove at jubilant supporters, hitting adults and children. Some bounced off his car or were dragged beneath it, causing injury and fear.
Defence counsel Simon Csoka said Doyle is horrified and racked with remorse, shame and deep sadness. Judge Andrew Menary said it was almost impossible to understand how a sensible person could act that way. Doyle sat in the dock at a Liverpool court.
