Vangelis Pavlidis slipped and missed a penalty as Benfica lost at Juventus in the Champions League, which, according to Glorioso 1904, was his first miss from the spot since 2019.

On Tuesday he had the chance to make it 1-2 but slipped as he struck and sent it wide. Until then he had converted his previous 15 spot-kicks for Benfica, with eight in the league this season.

Team-mates Aursnes and Ivanovic moved quickly to console him in Turin, followed moments later by João Rego. José Mourinho applauded in an attempt to lift his centre-forward's morale.

The Greek forward had already faced criticism for a miss against Porto during Benfica's Taça de Portugal exit. January has been bruising for Benfica, with three defeats in their last four matches, the sole win coming against Rio Ave. A loss to Braga ended their Taça da Liga campaign, and the result in Turin has complicated their play-off prospects.

Benfica return to Estádio da Luz on Sunday, 25 January, at 18:00 to face Estrela da Amadora. The fixture is for matchday 19 of the Liga Portugal Betclic.
