The match

Les Gones started the match well and established control over possession. This positive start was rewarded with an early goal. De Carvalho managed to find space and tee up Tolisso in the six-yard box, but the OL captain was thwarted by Mashpati. Nevertheless, the ball fell to Abner in a fortunate position to tap the ball home into an empty net.

Tolisso also made it 2-0 to the Ligue 1 club following a dangerous cross from Šulc, but the Frenchman couldn’t direct his effort goalwards at the near post. Minutes later, it was third time lucky for the World Cup winner as he found the back of the net. Abner stood up a teasing cross to the far post, which allowed the on-running Tolisso to head the ball home with ease.

The Rhǒne club piled on the turmoil as they were awarded a penalty after Pavel Šulc was pushed over in the box. Moussa Niakhaté stepped up to the penalty spot and made no mistake to score Les Gones’ third goal of the evening and his first since February 2024.

Lyon extended their lead just after half-time with Tolisso adding his second goal of the match. Šulc delivered a brilliant cross to the far post, and the World Cup winner was in the right place at the right time to head home for the second time on the night. Almost two minutes later, the midfielder should have scored his third from point-blank range. However, instantly after, Šulc fed the ball back to him and at the second attempt, he scored his hat-trick – the first of his professional career.

Karabec came off the bench in the second half and made an immediate impact. The Czech attacking midfielder scored OL’s sixth goal of the night as he squeezed the ball through Mashpati’s legs from a tight angle.

Lyon player ratings:

Rémy Descamps – 5

Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 5

Moussa Niakhaté – 6

Tanner Tessmann –  6

Operating as a make-shift centre back following an injury to Clinton Mata, the American midfielder put in a positive display. Using his qualities in possession, the USMNT international aided OL’s ability to dictate tempo and did not look out of place in what is a new position for him.

Nicolás Tagliafico – 5

Abner – 7

The Brazilian defender was afforded more attacking freedom against the Israeli side and reaped the benefits. Playing as a left-wing back, Abner found himself assuming both the role of creator and goalscorer on the night as he caused trouble with his attacking runs down the left flank.

Tyler Morton – 6

Mathys De Carvalho – 6

Corentin Tolisso – 9

In perhaps the best performance of his Lyon career, the OL captain couldn’t be contained by the Maccabi Tel Aviv defence. With his late runs into the box, the midfielder constantly found himself in dangerous positions and scored the first hat trick of his career. The World Cup winner could have scored 4 or 5 goals.

Pavel Šulc –  8

Martin Satriano – 4
