Peter Bosz’s side cut apart the struggling Premier League champions at Anfield, recording a 4-1 win to pile the pressure on ex-Feyenoord boss Arne Slot.

9. Aston Villa (No change)

Aston Villa have quietly nestled themselves in a strong position both at home and abroad. Six wins in seven Premier League games have put Unai Emery’s side in the top four, with a Morgan Rogers double sealing a 2-1 win at Leeds last weekend.

In midweek, Donyell Malen was the difference to put Young Boys to the sword at Villa Park. Villa are now level on points with leaders Lyon in the Europa League league phase.

8. Inter Milan ⬇️ (last week: 3)

Inter Milan have endured a tough return from the international break. Defeat to AC Milan in the Derby della Madonnina saw them relinquish top spot in Serie A, dropping down to fourth in what is becoming a fascinating title race.

In Europe, their perfect Champions League record also came to an end at Atletico Madrid. A stoppage-time winner from Jose Gimenez condemned Cristian Chivu’s side to back-to-back losses.

7. Barcelona (No change)

A mixed week for Barcelona, who followed an emphatic domestic win with a Champions League capitulation at Chelsea.

The Spanish champions headed to West London with confidence after easing past Athletic Bilbao in La Liga, but were well-beaten 3-0 in a Champions League setback. An own goal from Jules Kounde kickstarted their troubles, before captain Ronald Araujo was sent off before half-time

6. Chelsea 🆕

Welcome to the Power Rankings table, Chelsea.

Enzo Maresca’s men have now won eight of their last 10 in all competitions with their latest success arguably their best performance under the current coach.

Chelsea cruised past Barcelona in a statement win, with Estevao Willian starring to outshine fellow teenager Lamine Yamal at Stamford Bridge. The Blues appear to be getting better. Maybe there was method to their transfer madness after all.

5. Atletico Madrid ⬆️ (last week: 8)

Atletico Madrid continue to quietly creep up the standings. Five wins on the bounce have moved the Rojiblancos back into La Liga title contention, while a midweek win over Inter Milan enhanced their Champions League credentials. Their home record in Europe is outstanding. The Spanish side have won 11 of their last 12 European games on home soil.

4. Real Madrid ⬆️ (last week: 5)

There were dropped points for Real Madrid in La Liga last weekend as Elche battled to a draw with the league leaders, though Los Blancos remain just ahead of Barcelona.

Xabi Alonso’s side responded with an important win in midweek, as Kylian Mbappe scored four goals to inspire a 4-3 win at Olympiacos in the Champions League.

3. PSG ⬆️ (last week: 4)

“Vitinha, best midfielder in the world, he’ll be the next Ballon d’Or winner for me.”

That was the assessment of Tottenham’s Thomas Frank after watching the PSG midfielder at his magnificent best this week. Vitinha scored a hat-trick as PSG beat Spurs 5-3 in the Champions League, leading to Frank’s complimentary assessment.

That win followed a comfortable 3-0 success over Le Havre in a pleasing week for the Parisians.

2. Bayern Munich ⬇️ (last week: 1)

Bayern Munich are ousted from top spot in our Power Rankings after a first defeat of the season.

The German champions have been in unstoppable mood for much of the campaign, but fell 3-1 at Arsenal in the battle of the Champions League’s – and our Power Rankings – top two

1. Arsenal ⬆️ (last week: 2)

Arsenal are the new leaders, beating Bayern Munich to move above the German side. An impressive 3-1 at the Emirates stretched their perfect record in the Champions League, just days after thrashing Tottenham in the North London derby to extend their Premier League leader.

Mikel Arteta was subjected to ‘bridesmaid’ jibes last season, but the Arsenal boss has built a team that looks ready to take the big prizes. Can anyone stop the Gunners?
