Looking at this Newcastle team v Fulham.
Our next match at St James’ Park.
Newcastle United looking to follow up Tuesday’s Champions League victory over Benfica.
So can Eddie Howe’s side get back to Premier League winning ways?
If so, it would mean four wins in their last five games for Newcastle United, in all competitions. Clearly on an upward curve in both performances and results, here’s hoping.
As a reminder, this was the Newcastle team v Benfica on Tuesday:
Pope, Trippier, Thiaw, Botman, Burn, Bruno, Tonali, Joelinton, Gordon, Woltemade, Murphy
Eddie Howe gave an update on Friday, regarding injury and availability for this Benfica match.
He was positive about Yoane Wissa, Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento all still working their way back from injury. Hall seemingly the closest to making a playing return, though he won’t be competing for a start in this Fulham match.
Whilst Eddie Howe revealed that Sandro Tonali hadn’t been one hundred per cent in his recovery from a virus, so that was why he was left on the bench against Benfica. The Head Coach saying he would be monitoring Tonali in training to see what condition he is in ahead of Saturday’s match.
So where does that leave us?
This is my predicted Newcastle team v Fulham:
Pope, Trippier, Thiaw, Botman, Burn, Bruno, Tonali, Joelinton, Gordon, Woltemade, Murphy
If proved correct, this would mean two changes from the eleven that started against Benfica.
I thought both Lewis Miley and Jacob Ramsey did really well on Tuesday but I think Sandro Tonali and Joelinton will come back in. It makes sense, at least to me, for a number of reasons.
When fully fit and at their best, along with Bruno, both Tonali and Joelinton make up our clear first choice midfield trio.
My feeling is that Eddie Howe wanted to keep Fulham guessing and that Sandro Tonali will be ok to start today for sure. Probably for the best he got a shift off on Tuesday and similar with Joelinton, I think it will have helped refresh him and he looked good when coming off the bench in that Champions League match.
As I say, no negatives here about Ramsey and Miley, plus the former Villa man having come back after missing a lot of matches through injury. I would expect at least one, if not both, will be back in the team for Spurs in the cup on Wednesday, as Eddie Howe shares the workload.
Jacob Murphy did well on Tuesday and I think he will keep his place ahead of Elanga and indeed Barnes, despite his supersub heroics against Benfica.
So long as no injury/fitness worries, I can’t see any other changes. Especially as Nick Pope and his back four picked up another clean sheet on Tuesday.
