Looking at this Newcastle team v Union Nottingham Forest.
Only hours to go now before the Premier League match at St James’ Park.
Newcastle United looking to make it consecutive wins for a first time this season.
A brilliant performance and result in Brussels.
So can Eddie Howe’s side follow it up with another big victory, get Newcastle climbing the Premier League table as well as the Champions League one?
As a reminder, this was the Newcastle team v Union S-G:
Pope, Trippier, Thiaw, Botman, Burn, Bruno, Joelinton, Tonali, Gordon, Woltemade, Elanga
Eddie Howe confirmed on Friday that Tino Livramento is set to be missing for no longer than eight weeks. A big relief considering what we all feared might be the case.
With Ramsey and Wissa it was mixed news.
The pair had been expected to be back after this October international break, for the game at Brighton on Saturday 18 October.
It was mixed news though from the Head Coach on Friday, giving updates on the pair. He reported that Jacob Ramsey has made better progress than expected and is set to be in the matchday squad for this Forest match, though a place on the bench at best it appears, having been out for a sizeable time. Not so good news on Yoane Wissa, with Eddie Howe saying it was more likely to be early November when we will see the striker become finally available.
On a more positive note, the NUFC boss said that he wasn’t aware of any new injuries after the midweek Champions League win.
So where does that leave us?
This is my predicted Newcastle team v Nottingham Forest:
Pope, Trippier, Thiaw, Botman, Burn, Bruno, Joelinton, Tonali, Gordon, Woltemade, Elanga
If this proved the reality, it would of course mean a totally unchanged team, the same eleven that started against Union S-G.
I don’t think it is going to happen very often with such a packed schedule these weeks and months ahead, but just maybe, this Forest match will see a rare occurrence of the same team starting consecutive games.
After such a performance and result on Wednesday, why wouldn’t you want to keep the same team?
Not that I think everybody performed to the same level against Union S-G but I certainly don’t think anyone played below par.
This Forest game is huge as well, in terms of now hopefully putting a run of positive results together.
On the physical side of things, Newcastle have had four days since their European match (Forest only three).
Whilst with United two up by half-time and three to the good on 64 minutes, it allowed Eddie Howe the luxury of making multiple substitutions with the game safe.
Indeed, half of the outfield starters were subbed off, helping to hopefully ensure they are physically sound and raring to go for this Forest match.
Trippier, Bruno, Joelinton, Woltemade and Elanga, all coming off and Howe saving their legs from additional minutes.
Lewis Hall is of course somebody that many of us would like to see starting as many games as possible but Eddie Howe stated on Friday, that he is carefully managing the young left-back’s minutes after having surgery and a long recovery period.
