Paris Saint-Germain have hit out at the French FA after what they’ve called “serious and avoidable” injuries to Ousmane Dembélé and Désiré Doué, insisting that a new agreement between clubs and national sides is urgently needed.

Dembélé is expected to be sidelined for six weeks and Doué for around four, both having picked up muscle problems during France’s win over Ukraine.

The international break is always a headache for top clubs, who often lose key players to heavy travel and intense fixtures in the middle of an already packed schedule.

Following last season’s historic campaign, PSG boss Luis Enrique deliberately skipped a pre-season to give his squad maximum rest, and carefully rotated the team in the opening league games to avoid burnout. Even so, the plan has backfired, with both Dembélé and Doué breaking down on international duty.

Dembélé, widely tipped as a Ballon d’Or contender, came on at half-time against Ukraine on Friday but limped off in the 81st minute clutching his hamstring. PSG later confirmed it was a “serious” injury. Doué was also forced off, suffering a calf strain, and is expected to be out for about a month.

The pair will now miss PSG’s Champions League showdown with Barcelona on 1 October, along with a number of other crucial fixtures in France and Europe.

In a statement on Sunday, PSG accused the French national team of causing "significant sporting consequences" to both the club and players following the injuries and urged "swift and immediate corrective action."
