Vincent Kompany started with a strong side with Jamal Musiala and Nicolas Jackson starting, and Dayot Upamecano returning to the starting line-up.
The Dutch made a strong start and forced Jonas Urbig into making an early save after Ismael Saibari tested him with a right-footed shot from the right side of the box.
The game was just three minutes old, and Ivan Perisic found himself in a good position to shoot. His right-footed shot from the centre of the box went too high.
Bayern nearly responded with Tom Bischof, who hit the bar with a left-footed effort from a free-kick just outside the box.
In the 16th minute, Urbig was forced to make another strong save; this time, he kept a left-footed attempt from Sergino Dest at bay.
Seconds later, Joey Veerman came up with another effort on target, but his effort on the top right corner was saved by Urbig.
The best chance for Bayern fell to Nicolas Jackson, who was clear on goal, but with his left foot, he managed to hit straight at Matej Kovar.
Joshua Kimmich tried to produce a long-range piledriver, but couldn’t keep it on target. Moments later, Aleksander Pavlovic’s long-range effort was comfortably saved by Kovar.
Guus Til produced a sensational bit of skill from the left side of the six-yard box, but Urbig was equal to the task and denied him from close range.
The Bayern goalkeeper then made a world-class save to deny Perisic a header, keeping his side in the game.
The second half started with a lot of energy, with both sides scrappy and not making the most of their chances.
In the 57th minute, Bayern broke the deadlock through Jamal Musiala.
Tom Bischof intercepts a pass around his own penalty area and passes it to Karl, who carries the ball into the final third and plays one-two with Musiala. The German international produced an outstanding effort from close range to make it 1-0, reminding everyone what a world-class talent he is.
Moments later, Karl, who has been sensational on the night, tried to curl in with his left foot, but was saved by Kovar.
Luis Diaz made room for himself for a whack at goal, but he couldn’t keep it on target.
PSV kept pushing hard and found the equaliser through a moment of genius from Ismael Saibari, who scored a worldie from distance.
However, Bayern always score. With the quality they have, they are always likely to score, and they did through Harry Kane, who netted his 40th goal of the season.
Urbig played out a long pass to Diaz, who squared up Kane, and the England striker needed no second invitation to produce an exquisite finish.
Moments later, Kane came close to scoring again, but his close-range effort was saved by Kovar, and Sacha Boey could not hit the target on the rebound.
Mauro Junior picked up a red card towards the end of the match as PSV finished outside the top 24 and was eliminated as a result.
