Netherlands’ 2026 World Cup exit to Morocco in the round of 32 has sparked debate. Rafael van der Vaart says Ronald Koeman erred in selecting Memphis Depay, while backing the striker’s move to Corinthians.

"I do not think it was a mistake for Depay to move to Brazil, but I think it was a mistake for him to be called up for the World Cup," he told AceOdds.

"In my day, when you went to Türkiye, Dubai, Qatar or anywhere like that, it was a sign your time with the national team was over."

"I think it was a good move for him. He came off a long period of injuries and did very well there."

"For me, it is about the national team. It was a wrong decision by Koeman to call him up. Coaches would openly tell you your international story would be over if you did that."

Memphis is the Netherlands’ all-time leading scorer and has played 79 matches for Corinthians, recording 20 goals, 15 assists and winning the Paulistão 2025, Copa do Brasil 2025 and Supercopa 2026.

He is on holiday after the World Cup and is negotiating a possible renewal. His current deal runs until the 31st, and the club still owe him about R$ 40 million in bonuses accrued since 2024.
