Following the sacking of Russell Martin, former Sheffield Wednesday boss Rohl has become one of the frontrunners for the vacant post at Ibrox.

The 35-year-old German has been out of work since late July 2025 after leaving the South Yorkshire club by mutual consent, after he didn't return to the club's pre-season initially, before returning weeks later, but by then, bridges had already been burnt.

Rohl became a fan favourite at Hillsborough, in what was his first senior managerial role, having been an assistant at the likes of Southampton, Bayern Munich and the German national side. He conducted something of a 'great escape' to guide the Owls to safety after taking over during the first-half of the 2023/24 campaign before locking down a mid-table finish in his first and only full season in the Steel City.

Wednesday has had more than a few problems at the club over the summer surrounding the ownership of Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri, which is what led Rohl to angle for a move away from the club in the first place.

Rangers have had a nightmare start to the season, sitting in eighth place after seven games, with one win, five draws, and one loss, leaving them languishing in just above the relegation zone and 11 points off of league leaders Hearts.

Martin's possession-heavy style of football proved to be a bad fit with the Ibrox faithful, having been thumped in the Champions League qualifying stage by Belgian side Club Brugge, losing the tie 9-1 on aggregate.

A 1-1 draw away to Falkirk was the straw that broke the camel's back for Martin, who, ahead of this international break, was relieved of his duties just months into his tenure, leaving the Scottish giants in search of a new boss.

Steven Gerrard appeared as a favourite for the role, but it has since come to light that the former Liverpool midfielder has turned down a return to Glasgow, leaving Rohl as the main contender for the job.

If Rohl heads to Scotland, he will link back up with talented winger Djeidi Gassama, who featured heavily under Rohl during their time together at Wednesday.

Sean Dyche had been linked with the role in Glasgow, but it has recently emerged that the former Burnley and Everton manager is the frontrunner for the Nottingham Forest job should Ange Postecoglou be sacked.

Both Graham Potter and Gary O'Neil have been sounded out as potential Martin replacements, according to Mailsport, but it is Rohl who remains in pole position.

Owls fans will be watching on with particular interest as how this situation unfolds, as Rangers will be his first managerial job since leaving Wednesday in June.

Wednesday have, unsurprisingly, given their circumstances, struggled in the early stages of this campaign, sitting 23rd in the Championship table, with only fierce city rivals Sheffield United beneath them at this stage.

Danish boss Henrik Pedersen has been the person to take the reins at Hillsborough following Rohl's departure, and, although he has just one league win in nine games, calls for his head have not come to light, with the main focus being on the ownership of Dejphon Chansiri.
