Hojlund’s future had been the subject of transfer speculation throughout the summer transfer window, but exit rumours intensified as soon as the 2025/26 season kicked off.

The Dane was frozen out of the team by Ruben Amorim, who made it clear that he no longer had a future at Old Trafford.

Hojlund was informed that it was in his best interests to depart United and move elsewhere, as he would struggle to get minutes.

It’s understood that a devastated Hojlund had no desire to leave United but he reluctantly accepted to join Napoli in order to save his career.

He moved to the reigning Serie A champions on an initial loan deal with an obligation to make it permanent for £38m if they secure Champions League football.

Napoli are also set to pay United a loan fee for Hojlund.

The 22-year-old spoke to Napoli’s YouTube channel and admitted that he is a much better player courtesy of his time at United, despite the difficult period he endured in England.

Hojlund remarks

Hojlund said about the transfer to the Partenopei, “I was very excited, because it’s a team that just won the league. I also know how great the fans are, the city, and I’m very happy for this opportunity.”

He explained that he is already familiar with former United teammate Scott McTominay and spoke a “little bit” to Romelu Lukaku, a player he labelled as one of his role models in football.

Hojlund added, “It’s different now, obviously, as I come with more experience and I’m a better football player. I come with a lot of international experience.”

“I played in the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, and in multiple countries.”

“I come with a lot to prove, I want to show myself in the best team in Italy, and Napoli is going to be very, very good.”

He continued, “I always work hard, I like to say I want to die on the pitch, to give everything for the team, to score goals, create, and fight for everything.”

“I’ve been looking forward to this opportunity, I’m very, very grateful and I’m going to do my best to make us win something this year again, and to do the fans and club proud.”

Hojlund could make his Napoli debut on Saturday, 13 September, when they go away to Fiorentina.
