Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso has emerged as one of the most important players in Manuel Pellegrini’s squad since his arrival in Spain during the January transfer window last year.
His performances have been outstanding, making him a key figure for his side. As Betis prepare for a crucial clash against Real Madrid, Cardoso shared his thoughts on the game and some of the key figures in the Madrid squad.
Cardoso expressed his excitement about facing Real Madrid, acknowledging the challenge ahead. He believes Betis are well-prepared despite the difficulty of the task.
“I love these games. We are ready even if it is a difficult duel, we will fight until the end. Madrid are top, we can enjoy this. We will have to take advantage of the spaces and play a great game,” the American told AS.
When asked how Betis could overcome such a strong opponent, Cardoso highlighted the strength of his own team.
“It’s very difficult, but we’re Betis and we also have a very strong team. We will have to know how to suffer, we will have our chances.”

Discussing Real Madrid’s midfield, he reflected on the departures of Casemiro and Toni Kroos.
He recognised that replacing such high-calibre players is never simple, but Madrid have successfully adapted by integrating new players with different qualities.
He said that their ability to maintain dominance despite these changes proves the strength of their squad.
“They are two players of a very high level and it is difficult to replace that, but there are players of other characteristics who try to do that function. And you can see that they are succeeding.”
Regarding Vinicius Jr., Cardoso acknowledged his unique style of play, which often sparks reactions from both fans and rivals.
He described the Brazilian as a player who thrives on provocation, something common among Brazilian players. While this approach has both positive and negative aspects, Cardoso believes it is simply part of the game.

“I see that it is his style of play, he is a player who is motivated by provocations. That has positive and negative points, but I don’t care. Brazilians are usually like that, they put a lot of energy out there and they also provoke, but there is a limit to that,” he noted.
He also recognised the impact of Kylian Mbappe, considering him one of the best players in the world. He understands that facing such talent requires Betis to treat the game like a final.
“It is clear that Mbappe does everything very easily and we have to approach this as a final.”
Finally, Cardoso addressed the possibility of Dani Ceballos returning to Betis. He praised the midfielder’s discipline and quality, highlighting the level required to play for Real Madrid.
“Dani is a player I love to watch. You have to have a lot of things to play for Real Madrid, he’s very disciplined and he’s showing why he’s there. I would love to play alongside him,” he concluded.
