Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are weighing up a move for Manchester United midfielder Kobe Mainoo, according to reports from The Daily Mail.
The 20-year-old is attracting interest after being left out of United’s opening two games this season. His absence has raised questions about his immediate future at Old Trafford.
Mainoo is a highly-rated graduate of United’s youth system and has been tipped for a bright future at the club.
He earned a place in England’s squad for Euro 2024 and played a role in the competition, including starting in the final against Spain.
The young midfielder broke into United’s senior team last season and impressed with his composure and ability to dictate play.
It is believed he does not suit Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation, and being left out of the starting line-up seems to have intensified the situation.
Both Madrid clubs are believed to be assessing the possibility of signing Mainoo before the transfer window closes on Monday.
A loan switch is considered the most likely option should any deal materialise.
Mainoo is understood to be open to staying at United, but he is eager for consistent first-team football.
He is also attracted by the chance to feature in the Champions League, which both Madrid clubs can offer.
Despite that, a move will not be straightforward. The Red Devils are not planning to allow the midfielder to leave on loan.
The club only have four recognised central midfielders, making his departure a significant risk for the squad. A permanent transfer is also unlikely, as Mainoo remains an important part of the club’s long-term plans.
Although he has not featured yet this season, the campaign is still in its early stages. Amorim believes Mainoo will have a key role as the fixtures pile up.
For now, the La Liga clubs are monitoring the situation closely, but a deal before deadline day appears difficult.
