Atleti threatened in the opening stages, and Alexander Sorloth wasted a big chance to score the opener as he waited too long to shot, which allowed Eder Militao to make a crucial last man challenge on the Norwegian striker. Despite this, Real Madrid saw their defence breached soon after as Robin Le Normand headed home from close range following a lovely cross from the right by Giuliano Simeone.

However, Real Madrid were not behind for long, despite having been dominated in the minutes after Atleti scored. Arda Guler played Kylian Mbappe in behind, and La Liga’s top scorer made no mistake to make it 1-1.

And 10 minutes later, the first half comeback was complete as Guler netted from a Vinicius Junior cross. But unfortunately for Real Madrid, they could not hold the lead until half time. Koke Resurreccion delivered a cross into the box that was headed home by Sorloth, who made no mistake this time.

Atleti fire home three more unanswered goals in second half

Minutes into the second period, Atleti took the lead for the second time in the afternoon, and it came from the penalty spot. Guler was adjudged to have fouled Nicolas Gonzalez with a huge boot, and that allowed Julian Alvarez to follow up his hat-trick in midweek with a goal from 12 yards.

And the Argentine would double up in spectacular fashion soon after, curling home a wonderful free-kick that was agonisingly out of reach for Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. And the afternoon was capped off by Antoine Griezmann, who netted Atleti’s fifth in stoppage time.

It was a dismal 90 minutes for Real Madrid, who will now look to bounce back after a damaging afternoon in the Spanish capital. But for Atleti, they will take plenty of confidence of this, and rightly so.
