Real Madrid produced one of their most complete performances of the season as they defeated Manchester City 3-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 clash.

The night belonged to Federico Valverde, who delivered a sensational first-half performance by scoring three goals before the break.

His stunning hat-trick put Real Madrid in total control and left the Premier League side struggling to respond.

However, the match could have ended with an even bigger scoreline.

Early in the second half, Vinicius Jr. had the chance to make it 4-0 after winning a penalty following a challenge from Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Before the penalty was taken, Vinicius approached Valverde and offered him the chance to take the spot kick.

With the Uruguayan already having scored three goals, the opportunity was there for him to complete a memorable four-goal performance.

Despite that offer, Valverde decided to hand the responsibility back to Vinicius. The Brazilian forward stepped up to the spot but was unable to convert the chance.

Valverde’s explanation

After the match, Valverde spoke about the moment and explained what happened between the two teammates before the penalty was taken.

“Yes, yes, he asked me. Vinicius is a very important player for us. He’s a legend within the club.

“He’s a great friend, and since I told him to take it, many of my teammates thought the same.”

The Uruguayan also defended his teammate after the missed opportunity, stressing that such moments are part of football and should not overshadow the overall team performance.

“These things can happen. It’s part of football. It’s true that we’re left with that disappointment from the game. If he had been able to score, it would have been an incredible night.

“We’re left with that little thorn in our side, but it’s part of football. You can score a penalty, or you can miss it. The important thing is that he came out of that penalty with attitude, kept running, kept trying.

“The fans supported him and that’s what creates the bond between players and fans that will bring us a lot of joy,” concluded the midfielder.
