Real Madrid have triggered yet another massive financial windfall, securing a €15 million payout from Mario Gila’s high-profile transfer to AC Milan, reports Fabrizio Romano.

The Spanish giants are reaping the rewards of their elite academy monetization strategy, benefiting from a shrewd 50% sell-on clause embedded in the defender’s contract.

With AC Milan and Lazio finalizing an agreement on a €30 million total package for the talented centre-back, Lazio are legally obligated to send exactly half of that fee straight to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Gila excelled after leaving Real Madrid

Gila’s journey back to elite European prominence began in Real Madrid’s La Fabrica academy, where he developed into a crucial anchor for Castilla.

His exceptional form earned him a first-team breakthrough under Carlo Ancelotti during the 2021/22 season, making his official La Liga debut as a late substitute against Espanyol.

Recognising his need for regular top-flight minutes, Real Madrid sold Gila permanently to Lazio in July 2022 for a modest €6 million.

Crucially, Los Blancos refused to relinquish full control of the Spanish defender, maintaining a 50% stake in the player’s future transfer value.

The strategy has paid off massively. Gila established himself as one of Serie A’s most reliable defenders in Rome, forcing AC Milan to aggressively pursue his signature this summer.

The transfer to the San Siro marks a marquee signing for Milan, but the financial architecture of the deal means Real Madrid walk away as the summer’s ultimate winners without having to lift a finger.

Continued boost from former academy players

This €15 million influx adds to an unprecedented financial masterclass that has seen Real Madrid generate well over €100 million this summer strictly from former academy prospects.

Following Nico Paz’s €60 million blockbuster move to Como and the €20 million pocketed from Victor Munoz’s transfer to Liverpool, Gila’s move further highlights Real Madrid’s clever strategy in the transfer market.

Alvaro Rodriguez’s impending move to AFC Bournemouth will also fetch in excess of €12 million for the club, while Antonio Blanco could also help with a €5 million windfall amid growing La Liga interest.

By combining smart initial sales with aggressive sell-on clauses, Florentino Perez & co. have transformed the club’s youth system into an elite, self-sustaining revenue engine that continues to fund first-team operations.
