Dayot Upamecano appears to be moving closer towards a renewal with Bayern Munich, even as rumours swirl about Real Madrid’s interest in the player.
A centre-back by trade, the Frenchman has been one of the best-performing defenders in the Bundesliga this season, with his current contract expiring at the end of the season.
Real Madrid are among the clubs looking to sign Upamecano on a Bosman deal, but Bayern Munich are determined to renew his contract.
A recent report from BILD has offered an interesting update on the future of Upamecano, suggesting that the defender has reached an agreement with Bayern.
However, the agreement has been reached only regarding the player’s salary, signing fee and bonuses. Other details are yet to be resolved.
Bayern Munich, for their part, are aware that Upamecano is seeking a release clause to be embedded in his contract.

However, the club are pushing for the release clause to be valid only from the second season onwards, whereas the defender’s camp wants it to become available sooner.
The overall duration of the contract will be until 2028, meaning the deal extension will not guarantee the player’s long-term future at Bayern Munich at all.
Although the renewal does seem like the most likely outcome, Real Madrid’s fate in the Upamecano pursuit, at least in the medium term, rests completely on this final detail of the contract.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid have already planned for life without Upamecano, with English international Marc Guehi likely to emerge as the number one alternative to the Bayern Munich star.
