A recent report from SPORT has revealed that the Disciplinary Committee of the Spanish Football Federation is set to launch an investigation into Real Madrid.

This decision follows a formal complaint from La Liga regarding the club’s strong-worded statement about refereeing decisions in the competition.

The outlet mentions that the process will begin with an official case file being opened, after which an investigating judge will be assigned.

Within a period of six to eight weeks, the judge will present a recommendation to the Committee regarding potential sanctions.

These penalties could be directed at Real Madrid as a club, as a legal entity, or even extend to the Board of Directors led by Florentino Perez.

Once the recommendation is made, the Committee will review the case to determine if the proposed sanction should be fully enforced, partially upheld, or dismissed altogether.

What’s the story?

The controversy stems from a letter published by Real Madrid on February 3, following their match against Espanyol. The statement strongly criticised the referee’s performance, as well as the VAR decisions.

The club believed that the officiating in the game went beyond what could be considered human error or subjective interpretation, implying that the competition was being compromised.

Real Madrid’s grievances with refereeing did not stop there. In the weeks that followed, their frustration grew after two consecutive draws.

The club expressed their displeasure over a penalty awarded against them in the match against Atletico de Madrid and were also vocal about the red card shown to Jude Bellingham during the game against Osasuna.

That match also saw Real Madrid conceding a penalty, further fuelling their dissatisfaction with officiating standards.

With the Disciplinary Committee now taking action, Real Madrid could face consequences depending on how the investigation unfolds. The coming weeks will determine whether the club or its leadership will be sanctioned for their public criticism of refereeing decisions.
