Real Madrid are facing a major goalkeeping dilemma ahead of their upcoming match against Valencia, with both Thibaut Courtois and Andriy Lunin sidelined due to injury.

As such, according to a report from Mundo Deportivo, the club may turn to 19-year-old Fran Gonzalez, who could be set to make his senior debut this Saturday.

Courtois has been struggling with right knee issues that have already forced him to miss the last two matches.

To make matters worse, Lunin recently suffered a minor tear in his soleus muscle, further depleting Real Madrid’s goalkeeping options.

Neither goalkeeper was seen during the team’s latest training session, confirming fears that Gonzalez might be the only available option for Carlo Ancelotti.

Who is Fran Gonzalez?

The young goalkeeper has been the first-choice option for Raul’s reserve team and is listed as Ancelotti’s third-choice goalkeeper for both La Liga and Copa del Rey matches.

Signed by the club in 2022, Gonzalez has earned praise for his abilities in aerial duels and his sharp reflexes.

However, there are concerns over his footwork, which remains an area for improvement. Despite this, Real Madrid’s goalkeeping coach, Luis Llopis, is said to have great confidence in the youngster’s potential.

Crucial decision looms ahead of busy schedule

With a crucial match against Arsenal on the horizon, the pressure is mounting on the club to make a swift decision.

Courtois remains the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper, but his ongoing knee issues cast doubt over his availability for the upcoming fixtures.

Gonzalez’s inclusion in the senior squad could be a make-or-break moment for the 19-year-old.

Though his strengths are evident in his quick reflexes and aerial presence, his ability to handle the pressure of a top-flight match remains to be seen.

For now, Real Madrid’s goalkeeping crisis leaves Ancelotti with limited options. If Courtois and Lunin are not ready to return, Gonzalez’s debut against Valencia could mark a pivotal moment in his young career.
