Real Sociedad end July still without a signing, the same as when pre-season began on four July, and no official movement is expected immediately. Erik Bretos has concentrated on exits while the club scour the market, leaving them behind last summer’s pace. Tomorrow marks one year since Duje Caleta-Car joined on loan from Olympique Lyon.
According to Diario Vasco, Bretos has yet to present a new face with 22 days until the opener on Friday 21 at La Cartuja against Betis, despite knowing since 18 April they would play four competitions. The club believes Matarazzo has a good squad needing tweaks, and accuracy on incomings is paramount.
Targets remain a centre-back, ideally left-footed, and a forward who can play across the line. Other roles are being watched, with varied reasons for the hold-up. The market moves in stages in a World Cup year, with the most powerful acting first.
Last summer began on one August with Caleta-Car’s loan, then Gonçalo Guedes arrived three days later. August dragged as Girona and PSG held firm, so Carlos Soler and Yangel Herrera were completed on one September, after deals had been lined up the day before.
The previous year under Roberto Olabe moved faster. Sergio Gómez signed on 12 July, Javi López on 21 July, and Luka Sucic on two August. Nayef Aguerd, on loan, and Orri Óskarsson arrived on 30 August.
Across La Liga, Real Sociedad, Villarreal and Athletic are the only clubs yet to add. Both rivals have also changed head coach, with Iñigo Pérez joining Villarreal from Rayo and a German taking charge at San Mamés.
