Neither team scored in the first half as John McCarthy returned in goal for the LA Galaxy. The team had gone 0-0-3 with Micovic starting to begin the season.

How Christian Ramirez became the LA Galaxy's savior this game

After halftime, the Portland Timbers were the first team to score. Felipe Mora found broke the tie with his goal at the 49th minute, early on in the second half. David Costa was credited with the assist.

Harbor Miller, a 17-year-old defender, made another start for the LA Galaxy on the back line. However, veteran Miki Yamane subbed him out in the 64th minute. This was his first game on the field since the season opener against San Diego FC.

Another wave of substitutions for the LA Galaxy came less than 10 minutes later. Matheus Nascimento and Christian Ramirez checked into the game for Edwin Cerrillo and Miguel Berry, respectively.

The change of personnel on the field paid dividends for the Los Angeles Galaxy. Ramirez tied the game back up at 1-1 with his score at the 81st minute. Mathias Jorgensen (aka Zanka) earned his first assist on the season on the play.

After scoring four times as a team during Wednesday's win against Herediano, the LA Galaxy could only muster one goal. However, it was enough for the team to record the draw, giving them their first point of the season in the MLS Western Conference standings.

Ramirez was brought on this winter to replace forward Dejan Joveljic. The Serbian forward now plays for Sporting Kansas City who also entered this weekend winless (0-0-3).

With nine more minutes in regulation and an additional eight minutes of stoppage time, the 1-1 tie was not broken. Both the Los Angeles Galaxy and the Portland Timbers came of Sunday's game with one point. Neither team is off to a great start after both qualified for the playoffs last season.

If it weren't for newcomer Ramirez's goal late in the second half, the LA Galaxy would be 0-0-4 entering their next match. The six-time MLS Cup winners travel to St. Paul, Minnesota to play Minnesota United FC next Saturday, March 22nd.
