Refcam footage released by Sky Sports offers a rare view of Anthony Taylor’s calls during Sunderland’s 2-1 win at St James’ Park last Sunday, according to Sunderland Echo.
Early in the first half, Taylor paused play to warn Newcastle assistant Jason Tindall and Sunderland coach Michael Proctor over dissent towards the fourth official, adding that further incidents would bring bookings.
Newcastle appealed for a penalty when Anthony Gordon went down, but Taylor ruled Trai Hume had not fouled him and that Gordon initiated the contact by stepping across. A VAR check upheld the on-field call.
Just before half time, Hume was cautioned for a foul on Anthony Elanga. After a flare-up involving Gordon, Omar Alderete and Joelinton, Taylor dispersed players, then told captains Granit Xhaka and Kieran Trippier two others should have been booked and asked them to take control.
In the second half he swiftly awarded Chemsdine Talbi’s equaliser, judging Aaron Ramsdale was impeded by a team-mate and that, following Hume’s follow-up, Habib Diarra used his chest to redirect the ball. VAR confirmed both judgments. At 1-1, he then correctly decided Jacob Murphy was interfering from an offside position as Malick Thiaw headed into the Sunderland net.
Later, Taylor deemed Ramsdale had made a save before Brobbey turned in the rebound. Murphy’s handball appeal was met with the referee querying who it was against, then maintaining he had seen none. Brobbey was booked for removing his shirt, and VAR again confirmed the goal.
