Régis Le Bris hailed Trai Hume after the Sunderland stalwart's second Premier League goal launched a famous win over Chelsea and sealed Europa League qualification.
Hume has risen with Sunderland from League One to seventh in the top flight, playing more minutes than anyone except Robin Roefs and Enzo Le Fée. He has recently reprised a right-wing role ahead of an attacking full back, a regular talking point among fans. According to Sunderland Echo, Le Bris's pre-match faith was rewarded at the Stadium of Light, though he said it did not surprise him.
He argued evaluation is not only technical, stressing connection, hard work and balance between players. He said such qualities can lead to an emergence, and that was the case for Hume on the day.
Another stalwart, Luke O'Nien, returned to the starting XI with an excellent display. He defended well and split the lines for the crucial second, finding Brian Brobbey as Sunderland poured forward.
Le Bris added that Hume and O'Nien have helped preserve the club's identity after a major summer overhaul, setting the tone in the dressing room and guiding new arrivals.
Both now look set for important roles next season as Sunderland manage an increased fixture schedule.
