Vasco’s first-choice back line kept its first clean sheet under Renato Gaúcho in a 2-0 win over Paysandu, the first leg of the Copa do Brasil fifth round.
According to Globo.com, a shutout had come earlier against Argentina’s Barracas Central, but that was with a rotated side as regulars were preserved between Brasileirão and cup duties. The defence that night featured Fuzato, Puma, Cuesta, Freitas, Walace Falcão and Avellar.
Against Paysandu, the preferred unit started. Puma was selected over Paulo Henrique by choice, continuing their 2026 rotation. Léo Jardim, Saldivia, Robert Renan and Cuiabano completed the back line.
Jardim and Cuiabano were decisive before the break, the goalkeeper producing a fine save and the full-back making a crucial clearance to keep the visitors out.
Since Renato’s debut against Palmeiras, Vasco have conceded 14 goals in 11 matches, an average of 1.27 per game.
Renato said Paysandu made it a demanding contest, particularly in the first half, and praised his team’s commitment after a long trip, describing the display as good enough and noting a small advantage for the return in Rio.
His record now stands at 57 percent from 11 games, five wins, four draws and two defeats. The next target is a first league clean sheet under Portaluppi, with Corinthians away on Sunday at 16:00 (Brasília) at Neo Química Arena, then Paysandu at São Januário on 13/05, Wednesday, at 19:00 (Brasília).
