Fresh reporting from Caught Offside has thrust Alessandro Bastoni firmly into the Premier League spotlight, with Arsenal and Liverpool both credited with strong interest in the Inter defender. It is a story that feels credible, timely and entirely in keeping with the modern transfer landscape.
At 26, Bastoni is described as one of Europe’s most complete modern defenders, a centre back who blends “traditional Italian defensive discipline with the technical elegance of a deep-lying playmaker”. That is not hyperbole. Those who have followed his trajectory at Inter Milan will recognise a footballer operating at the height of his powers.
Former Inter defender Marco Materazzi believes Bastoni has been a “leader” at the club, and that word resonates. Leadership, particularly in elite defensive units, cannot be manufactured overnight. It is earned through consistency, big match temperament and tactical intelligence.
Inter have built much of their recent identity around Bastoni’s skillset. He is comfortable stepping into midfield, breaking lines with progressive passes and initiating attacks from deep. As noted in the original report, he functions as both defender and distributor. Unlike many centre backs, Bastoni thrives under pressure, often acting as the first creative outlet during build up phases.

His statistics this season underline that influence. Across 35 matches in all competitions, he has registered 2 goals, 6 assists and 14 clean sheets. For a defender, those numbers speak volumes about both defensive solidity and attacking contribution.
Interest from Arsenal and Liverpool makes tactical sense. Liverpool are said to view Bastoni as a long term successor to Virgil van Dijk, a significant endorsement given the Dutchman’s standing at Anfield. With Arne Slot now at the helm, Liverpool’s evolution towards a more structured possession game could make Bastoni an ideal fit.
At Arsenal, the alignment appears equally clear. Under Mikel Arteta, the Gunners demand composure, vertical passing and bravery in the first phase of build up. Bastoni’s ability to carry the ball forward and dictate tempo from the back makes him uniquely suited to such a system.
Barcelona are also credited with admiration, viewing his clean distribution and composure as a natural fit for their possession heavy philosophy. Meanwhile, Chelsea and Manchester City are monitoring developments, albeit more cautiously.
Inter publicly consider Bastoni untouchable and are reportedly working on extending his contract until 2030, with improved financial terms. Yet, as Caught Offside point out, “the realities of modern football finance mean even the most loyal partnerships can be tested”.
It is understood that Inter would only entertain offers starting between €90-100 million, potentially higher given recent defensive transfer benchmarks. In a market where elite centre backs are scarce and tactical profiles matter more than ever, that valuation reflects both scarcity and status.
From a Premier League perspective, this is a situation to watch closely. Clubs are not merely buying defenders anymore, they are investing in system architects. Bastoni, by every measurable standard, fits that description.
From an Arsenal standpoint, this report sets pulses racing. If Bastoni truly is available, even at €100 million, Arsenal must be in that conversation.
Imagine him stepping into Arteta’s structure, receiving under pressure at the Emirates, fizzing passes into midfield and carrying the ball through the first line of press. He has already been labelled a “leader”, and that is precisely what elevates good sides into title winners.
Arsenal have built a young, hungry core, but adding a 26 year old in his peak, with Champions League pedigree and Serie A experience, could be transformative. His 14 clean sheets this season, coupled with 6 assists, show he impacts both boxes. That dual threat is invaluable in tight 2-1 or 1-0 contests that define title races.
Liverpool’s interest is understandable, particularly as they plan for life beyond Van Dijk. Yet Arsenal’s project feels primed for a statement signing. If the club are serious about bridging the final gap domestically and in Europe, this is the calibre of defender required.
Bastoni would not simply add depth, he would add authority. And for supporters craving that final piece in a title puzzle, this is a name that demands attention.
