Mourinho’s gesture towards the television cameras after Benfica’s 2-1 derby win at Sporting drew attention. O Jogo reports it was directed at those who criticise him daily, a call for greater respect.
The result at Alvalade came via goals from Andreas Schjelderup on 27 minutes and Rafa Silva in the 90+3rd. Benfica moved provisionally second in the Liga Portugal Betclic on 72 points, with Sporting holding a game in hand.
Asked in his press conference to explain the gesture, the Benfica coach declined to spell it out.
The report added that his focus throughout the match was on ensuring Benfica finish the season as well as possible.
The victory carried extra significance. Mourinho remains unbeaten against Sporting. Rafa Silva added to his tally against Sporting, his second-most prolific opponents, and Benfica ended a four-year wait for an away win there.
