Despite having had some ups and downs, FC Barcelona are once again enjoying a very strong season on all fronts.

Hansi Flick’s men have already won the Spanish Super Cup, are in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, are leading the La Liga title race, and made it into the top eight of the UEFA Champions League from an unlikely position.

The team has shown great mental resilience to bounce back after going behind in matches on several occasions. And, everything appears to be going swimmingly for the reigning Spanish champions.

Flick concerned with the lack of chance-conversion

However, as per SPORT, the only real concern currently on Flick’s mind, with regard to Barcelona’s performances this season, is their inability to convert all the chances they create in front of goal.

The German tactician made it clear while addressing the media after the Copa del Rey tie against Albacete earlier this week, when he said: “It was a difficult game. We had a lot of chances. I’m proud of the team because we play every three days.”

“It was a very even match, but we need to finish our moves better,” he added.

This was particularly evident in the recent win over Elche in La Liga. At the Martinez Valero last weekend, the Catalans managed to get all three points, but they recorded an xG of 6.5 – the highest since data has been available – but only scored three.

Against Real Sociedad last month, Barcelona’s xG was 3.6, but they lost the match 2-1. Last night against Albacete, the xG recorded was 3, but Barça managed only a 2-1 win.

Across those three matches, the data suggested that 13 goals should have been scored, yet only six were actually converted, less than half.

Flick is fully aware that this aspect is crucial in order to achieve the objectives ahead, especially in a competition as demanding as the Champions League. Without clinical finishing, the consequences can be decisive.
