‘Responsible decision’ as Wolves chief defends £38m Joao Gomes move to Aston Villa | OneFootball

According to ExpressAndStar.com, Wolves technical director Matt Jackson called selling Joao Gomes the responsible decision after the midfielder completed a £38 million move to Aston Villa.

The 25-year-old Brazilian joined Wolves from Flamengo for £15 million in 2023 and was widely expected to depart following relegation. Villa were not viewed as his most likely destination at the start of the summer.

That picture shifted when Unai Emery sought midfield cover after Youri Tielemans joined Manchester United and Amadou Onana sustained a serious knee injury. Villa then moved quickly to sign Gomes, while Jackson said the sale served Wolves’ wider interests as they rebuild under new head coach Cesar Peixoto.

He hailed Gomes as exemplary on and off the pitch and backed him to have an outstanding career. Jackson added that, for clubs without unlimited resources, trading is a natural part of becoming stronger collectively, and he believes supporters understand the model.

Jackson remains confident Wolves will finish the window well. Early business brought in Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez, though Rafiki Said is the only arrival since Peixoto replaced Rob Edwards. After two weeks of training, he said the staff are building a positive bond with the squad and there will be changes before the window closes, while he likes the team’s current shape.
