Lazio said in a statement that Alessio Romagnoli has never been on the market and will remain at the club, following days of talk over a move to Al-Sadd.

The 31-year-old appeared to bid farewell to travelling supporters after Saturday’s stalemate with Lecce at the Via del Mare, signalling an imminent exit.

Earlier in the week, he had reportedly told president Claudio Lotito he wanted to leave during a fiery meeting, and Maurizio Sarri was unable to change his mind.

Romagnoli had been reported to have agreed a three-year contract with Roberto Mancini’s Al-Sadd worth a total of €18 million, with the clubs discussing a permanent transfer of around €8 million. The club’s statement also described him as central to the sporting project, citing technical, personal and leadership qualities.

Attention now turns to Romagnoli’s response and whether Al-Sadd return to the table or back away. The coming hours could clarify a curious situation.
