Roy Hodgson has criticised Newcastle United fans for their reaction to Sunderland’s Tyne-Wear derby win at St James' Park.
Newcastle led after 10 minutes through Anthony Gordon before Sunderland took control in the second half and Brian Brobbey struck a late winner to complete a Premier League double. It is more than two weeks since that match, yet the fallout has lingered on Tyneside. Hodgson discussed the episode on the Wayne Rooney podcast.
“If I were 28 now, I think it would be very hard to have any length of career (in management). It’s all about results. As soon as results (turn)… It amuses me sometimes to see a team doing really well.”
“A team is doing really well in the league and (the fans) must be delighted. The game ends with them having lost it, I mean, take Newcastle… I saw that they were booed off the field by their fans.”
“Now that’s almost unthinkable. Newcastle was one of the teams that didn’t boo the fans off, even if you go back 20, 30 years.”
“But they had the temerity to lose a game, which they were not supposed to lose. Well, unfortunately, it is a game, and you have a better chance of winning if you’re Arsenal or Man City.”
Sunderland are next in action this Sunday against Tottenham Hotspur at the Stadium of Light in the Premier League, after the international break. A win would see the Black Cats move up to 46 points.
