United were beaten by two stunning goals
Roy Keane slammed Manchester United in the wake of the Red Devils’ 2-1 defeat by Aston Villa, admitting that he was “glad” his former club were “getting punished”.
Ruben Amorim’s side were beaten by a Morgan Rogers brace at Villa Park, with the England international’s two goals sandwiching Matheus Cunha’s equaliser.
The result leaves United seventh in the Premier League table, and they lose further ground on the top four in the race for the Champions League.
In the Sky Sports studio afterwards, former United midfielder Keane lambasted his old club for their lackadaisical work out of possession.
"You can have all the talent in the world, but you have to roll your sleeves up and when the game gets a bit tight you say you're going to do your bit for the team," he said.
"There are too many players who don't do enough. Not just [Diogo] Dalot. In the last two games United have conceded six goals. What chance have you got? Newcastle are coming up in a few days, they'll come to Old Trafford and enjoy it, they'll have runners.
"These are the ugly bits of football. We know you've got the other bits, but you've got to do the ugly bits. That's what all the top teams do.
"But you can also dig deep, you can win by playing ugly. You have to find a way to do that.
"Out of possession they're one of the worst teams in the league. With the ball they're good, but if you want to be a top footballer, it's about what you do out of possession.
"United cut corners, take too many risks and I'm glad they get punished. I like to see teams getting punished who take chances and let their team-mates and fans down."
The Red Devils had had the better of proceedings in the first half at Villa Park, but found themselves behind when Leny Yoro failed to close down Rogers on the left flank, with the Villa forward bending a stunner beyond Senne Lammens.
It was Dalot who was turned inside out by the weaving Youri Tielemans on the Villa left for the second, with the Belgian delivering a cross that fell kindly for Rogers to latch onto and slam into the far corner.
The three points leaves Unai Emery’s Villans in a strong position in the table, sat third on 36 points.
They are three adrift of pace-setters Arsenal, and have a seven-point cushion on fourth-placed Chelsea.
