Rui Costa intends to extend winger Jaden Umeh’s deal despite a serious muscle injury, with a return pencilled in for October, according to Glorioso 1904.

Umeh sustained the injury in a pre-season friendly against Flamengo. Initial hopes it was minor faded after post-match tests confirmed a more serious problem.

Benfica retain full confidence in the Ireland international and remain set on keeping one of their most highly rated academy prospects.

Umeh had been one of Marco Silva’s pre-season picks, using the absence of several internationals to impress the staff. His strong showings encouraged the coach before the setback checked his momentum.

Having recently turned 18, Umeh is expected to sign a long-term contract, underlining the club’s investment in his future. He is part of a promising cohort alongside José Neto, Daniel Banjaqui, Anísio Cabral and Miguel Figueiredo, all already handed first-team opportunities.
