Leicester City are closing in on appointing Russell Martin as manager as they prepare for life in League One.
The Telegraph claims the former Southampton boss has signed a three-year contract, with an announcement expected in the next 48 hours. Martin has long been a target for the club’s hierarchy.
City attempted to appoint him last season, but he chose Rangers instead and was sacked in October after a poor start to the Scottish Premiership. Marti Cifuente was then hired, only to be dismissed in January after a damaging run of form.
Gary Rowett stepped in to try to avert the drop, and although performances improved, relegation to League One was confirmed before the season ended. He was contracted until the end of the campaign and made clear he wanted to stay.
Martin now appears set to lead the rebuild at the King Power Stadium. He began his coaching career at MK Dons, moved to Swansea City, then guided Southampton up via the 2023/24 play-offs.
One of his first games in charge would be a pre-season friendly against Northampton Town at Seagrave on Saturday, July 11. City also face Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday, July 18.
