Saints hold City to edge past Premier League low

Already relegated Southampton earned a goalless draw against a lacklustre Manchester City to sneak past the Premier League’s all-time lowest points tally by reaching 12 at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday.

The Saints have now avoided matching Derby County’s infamous 11-point haul from the 2007-08 campaign, ensuring the unwanted record stands for at least another season.

City had the chance to draw level in the table with second-placed Arsenal, but delivered a flat and uninspired performance just a week away from their FA Cup final clash with Crystal Palace.

Erling Haaland made his return from injury, but was largely ineffective, as Pep Guardiola’s men moved the ball slowly and failed to break down Southampton’s resolute and crowded back line.

Manuel Akanji headed off target from a set-piece and Bernardo Silva had a close-range effort cleared off the line by Saints skipper Jack Stephens.

It wasn’t until the closing stages that Southampton keeper Aaron Ramsdale was properly tested, producing a sharp save to deny Ruben Dias' header, while Omar Marmoush struck the crossbar with a powerful shot from distance.

The final whistle was met with applause from the home fans, as Southampton secured only their third clean sheet of the campaign.
